The first in an eight book saga about a working class London family and their friends who live and work in Newgate Street next to the Old Bailey. This first novel details their lives before war engulfs them. There are funerals, affairs, deception, violence, and even a murder. And to those familiar with the Miriam series, there is a surprising and familiar visitor.

A novel with domineering mothers, obsessions with famous trials and hangings and a great deal of frustration that the little corporal from Germany was going to take over their lives. Yet amongst the anger and heartache of their everyday existence, many of their frustrations arrive from realising that they and all they know are going to be subject to an unknowable future…

This was one of those novels written many years ago and it has now been extensively rewritten in 2024 eliminating the grammatical errors that I had previously made. I humbly apologise for those early readers who struggled with it and made this book such a success.
